“The home as a whole is like a family, we all help one another and pitch in when anything is needed”

Hi, I’m Thamanna. I am a Senior Care Assistant at Robertson Nursing Home and have been a member of the team here since 2021. Before moving to the UK, I worked in the medical field as a biomedical scientist. I have a master’s degree in microbiology and have always been interested in biology and medicine.

When I first moved here, I worked in a range of care roles, including other care homes and a rehabilitation centre. I enjoy taking care of people, so working in care felt like a good fit for me. It’s a job I really like. I am also naturally very patient, which I think is a useful trait when working as a carer.

I came back to Robertson in September 2024 after being on maternity leave, and in January 2025, I began training as a Senior Care Assistant. As I developed in my new role, I took on responsibilities such as doing daily checks, monitoring that equipment is in good condition, doing audits, recording patient notes and overseeing the care team. I work partially on the floor with the residents while also working supernumerary hours to develop my skills. I am currently training in medication administration so I can support the nursing team. I have really enjoyed taking on the new responsibilities and the opportunities I have had for development.

The part I enjoy most about my job is interacting with the residents, supporting them, and making sure that they are comfortable and happy. I like working as part of a team and being there to help my team with anything they need. I also enjoy working with the nursing team whenever they need extra support. It is nice to be involved in the medical field given my education and career background.

Working at Robertson has been a really good experience. I am so happy to work here, everyone at the home is very helpful both professionally and personally.  Our manager, Gabi, is very supportive, and I enjoy working with our team leader. In the care team, we all support each other and work well as a team. The home as a whole is like a family, we all help one another and pitch in when anything is needed, whether that’s in the kitchen, with laundry or cleaning. If we are ever short-staffed, the teams help each other to make sure the residents have everything they need.

I also feel like I am supported personally by everyone at the home, especially the management. With two young children at home, I have been given the flexibility with my hours to make sure I can be there for my children when I am needed. Everyone at the home is open and inclusive, I am Muslim, and when I need to take time to pray, my colleagues are very supportive of this.

When I returned from maternity leave it felt like I had never left. Everyone was happy to welcome me back, and I have had only positive feedback from everyone since my return. It feels nice to know I am helping, and my team members are happy to work with me.
