Art in Care Homes

Published on 24th September 2024

Creativity and the arts have a very important place within the care industry and play a big part in life for our residents at Beritaz Care homes.

Embracing the arts within our homes provides many fantastic benefits for residents’ wellbeing. Our arts & crafts clubs are one of the most popular activities with residents across all our homes and are a regular feature in our activities calendars. We keep these activities varied, with lots of different materials, themes and techniques featured in our arts & crafts sessions, so residents are able to try their hand at a broad range of art styles. No matter the medium or style, something all these activities offer residents is the opportunity to relax, take time to think and discover a new way to express their feelings. Art is both a creative and emotional outlet for our residents and welcomes all levels and abilities.

Many of our artistic activities encourage skills that help residents with concentration, coordination and fine motor skills, making this a fantastic way to promote cognitive exercise. Within our homes, residents have the option to take part in group artistic activities or engage in art as a quiet, solo pastime, whichever way they prefer. When working on their art pieces as a communal activity, our residents often enjoy sharing their ideas with each other, giving feedback and support, working together on a project or simply having a nice chat while they work. Art can truly bring people together and that is something we regularly witness in our homes.

Several of our residents are talented artists in their own right, who have pursued art as a pastime throughout their lives. It brings us a lot of joy to see them continue to embrace their passion for art while living as a resident of our homes and this is something we are always happy to facilitate. Their skill and passion is also shared throughout the home, inspiring other residents to try an artistic project or by the shared enjoyment we all get from viewing the lovely pieces of artwork they create.

Today is the National Day for Arts in Care Homes, a campaign that encourages care homes across the country to embrace the arts and the benefits they can offer to residents, staff and relatives. There are so many benefits to making creative activities accessible to residents within care homes, just a few materials and a little encouragement can see a big impact on the wellbeing of residents.
