Baking up a storm at Beritaz Care

Published on 15th October 2025

Out of the wide variety of activities and hobbies our residents have the chance to take part in within our homes, a favourite activity with many residents is baking. Whether they’re baking cakes, choosing fillings for pastries or decorating biscuits, baking is a familiar and fulfilling activity that for many residents is a great source of enjoyment.

There are so many benefits to getting involved in baking as a pastime and it is something that plays a big part in life at Beritaz Care. Baking can be a really enjoyable way for our residents to get creative while encouraging them to engage in an active and relaxing pastime. The residents carry out much of the baking preparation independently, which gives them a sense of fulfilment and often inspires happy memories from other times in their lives. The process of measuring ingredients, mixing, and seeing the finished results of their efforts can provide a real sense of accomplishment, while the physical process of baking has great benefits for motor skills and coordination.

Baking is also a wonderful way to encourage social connections, baking within our homes is often a group activity and provides the opportunity for teamwork and interaction. Some of our homes even offer a baking club, where residents meet regularly to take part in their favourite activity and chat about an interest that they all share, while getting to feel part of a community and form friendships with their fellow residents.

Our fantastic kitchen teams in our homes are regularly baking delicious treats for our residents to enjoy. They produce some wonderful cakes, biscuits and scones when we host an afternoon tea for the residents, or invite friends and family to join us at the homes for a celebration. Having these lovely homemade treats brings a lot of joy to our residents and makes an afternoon cup of tea feel extra special. On their birthdays our residents always enjoy a wonderful birthday cake that they can share with friends, family and the other residents, which helps them to celebrate the occasion in a special way.

This week is National Baking Week, and it feels like the perfect opportunity to celebrate the joys of baking with our residents. Getting involved in mixing the ingredients, rolling out biscuit dough or decorating their own cakes are all activities that benefit our residents’ physical and mental wellbeing. But, according to our residents, the best part is tasting their creations at the end.

Whether it’s our residents baking for fun, or our kitchen team creating special treats for our residents and visitors, the smell of baked goods filling our homes is always wonderful to experience. While some residents enjoy getting involved in the baking, others are happy to help with tasting, but we can all agree that baking brings so much happiness to our homes.
