Within our homes, residents get the chance to make lots of new friends, from their fellow residents to members of staff, and even some new pals of the four-legged variety. Animals can have such a positive effect on the lives of our residents, and we provide regular opportunities to interact with a variety of different animals for those who wish to.
As well as enjoying visits from the pets of staff and family members, we also work with some wonderful organisations local to our homes to run animal therapy sessions with our residents. These sessions not only give the residents a chance to enjoy a cuddle with these very sweet and well-behaved animals (which they find very calming), but also an opportunity to learn more about different species from their experienced handlers.
From dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, to farmyard animals like ducks, piglets, goats and donkeys. We have even enjoyed visits from birds of prey, reptiles, insects and a miniature horse. Watching the animals run around and causing mischief during their visits to the homes always leads to lots of laughter and smiles. It also makes us happy to know that the animals are so well cared for and enjoying themselves with the attention and cuddles from our residents and staff.
How our residents benefit from time spent with their four-legged friends
Time spent cuddling or stroking an animal has been proven to have a calming effect, providing our residents with comfort and helping them to relax, particularly in times of high anxiety. Animals also provide emotional support and companionship, which can be especially beneficial for those who are feeling lonely or having a difficult time. Many of the animals also encourage our residents to get on their feet; moving around to walk a miniature horse or pet a dog are great examples of gentle movement that benefits mobility. Did you know, stroking an animal’s fur can lower blood pressure and heart rate, promoting good heart health?
Learning about different species and animal care
Engaging with these animals also provides fantastic mental stimulation for our residents. Learning interesting facts about birds of prey and types of insects has been a fascinating experience for our residents. They have also had the chance to get hands-on knowledge about animal care, like feeding a piglet from a bottle and how to correctly handle a snake. Many of our residents have commented on how much they have enjoyed these new experiences.
Sparking fond memories through reminiscence
While making new animal friends, their own beloved pets are never far from our residents’ minds. These animal therapy sessions have inspired so many brilliant conversations between residents and staff, sharing stories of their family pets, spending time on farms, and meeting exotic animals on their travels. Animals and pets have inspired many of our reminiscence sessions, helping our residents to relive fond memories.
All part of our holistic approach to care
At Beritaz Care, we are here to support more than the physical and healthcare needs of our residents. Within our homes, we prioritise the mental health of our residents and take steps to support their emotional wellbeing through the varied and engaging activities programmes offered. Animal therapy is a great example of the kind of group activity regularly available to all residents that is engaging, encourages socialisation, and promotes wellbeing. The wonderful animals explore the home to also visit some residents in their rooms, so even those who are unable to come to the communal areas can still take part.
Join us in celebrating National Pet Month
As April marks National Pet Month, we wanted to take a moment to show our appreciation for all our animal friends of all species. We are grateful for every single smile and special memory created by all the animals in our lives, and for the happiness they have brought to our residents.
