Springkell House rated ‘Good’ by CQC

A few months ago, Springkell House Care Home was visited by inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for an assessment of our care services and standards. We have now received the report following the inspection and are delighted to share that the home has received an overall rating of ‘Good’.
 
 In addition to this overall rating, we are pleased to have also been rated as ‘Good’ in all assessment categories, including ‘safe’, ‘caring’, and ‘effective’.
 
 All Beritaz Care homes are inspected by third-party organisations, including regular mock inspections, to ensure we are maintaining high standards of care services and home operations. CQC is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England.
 
 We are very proud of these results from the latest CQC assessment of the home, which reflects the dedication and skill of our staff under the leadership of Jogi, the Home Manager at Springkell House. This was the first inspection since Jogi took on management of the home; his passion and vision for the home was recognised by the inspectors as well as the positive initiatives he has introduced.
 
 Here are some highlights from the report:
 
 ⭐️ People told us they were happy living at Springkell House and felt it was a homely environment. People and their relatives described staff as being caring and kind.

⭐️ People and their relatives told us they felt safe at Springkell House. One person told us, “Oh yes I do feel completely safe. I think it’s the people around, they are so nice.” One relative told us, “We like the way people pop in all the time to check on him.”

⭐️ The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

 ⭐️ The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity.

⭐️ People and their relative told us staff were kind and respectful. One person told us, “They are very kind, and everybody knows me now and looks after me.”

 ⭐️ We observed staff knew people well. They spent time talking to people about things which were personal to them such as people’s families, significant events, past lives or how they had spent their time.

⭐️ There was affection shared between people and staff such as holding hands and shared smiles when speaking together.

 ⭐️ People were able to make choices regarding their care and how they spent their time. There was a variety of activities available including visiting entertainers and exercise specialists.

 ⭐️ People and their relatives said they felt there was a positive culture and homely feel to Springkell House.

⭐️ One person told us, “I’ve got a forever home now if I want it. I have no concerns at all.” One relative told us, “All the staff smile as you walk through the door and are never too busy to talk to you. It’s really friendly and positive here.”

 ⭐️ People told us they enjoyed their food, particularly as it was homemade and fresh. The registered manager and chef had increased the use of fresh ingredients used and had daily deliveries from local suppliers.

 ⭐️ The design of the home considered the needs of people living with dementia and mobility issues. There was good signage to direct people to different areas, handrails in corridors and a lift to the upper areas of the home.

⭐️ The provider supported people to manage their health and wellbeing to maximise their independence, choice and control. Staff supported people to live healthier lives and where possible, reduce their future needs for care and support.

 ⭐️ A registered manager was in post who had worked at the service in a number of different roles. They demonstrated commitment to developing a positive, person-centred culture which respected people’s diverse needs.

⭐️ One person told us, “I think the manager here is a very nice [person] and [they] always ask if I have everything I need.”
 
 ⭐️ One relative stated, “I really do [think the service is managed well] because I feel that since [registered manager] has taken over [they are] really trying to install some really good changes. [They are] trying passionately to make a good go of it.”

⭐️ Staff told us they felt respected and valued as part of the Springkell House team. One staff member told us, “I think the manager is very thoughtful and makes us all feel very welcome and part of this place. It is like a family here; I love coming to work.”

 ⭐️ The provider focused on continuous learning, innovation and improvement across the organisation and local system. They encouraged creative ways of delivering equality of experience, outcome and quality of life for people.
