Supporting residents and families living with dementia

Published on 10th September 2026

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, an annual campaign by the Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia and the impact they have on families worldwide.

At Beritaz Care, we are passionate about supporting individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia. Working within the care industry means this is a topic very close to the hearts of everyone at Beritaz Care, and we are keen to do our part to show our support both inside and outside of our homes.

Improving education and encouraging conversation on the topic of Alzheimer’s is an important step in raising awareness. Staff within our homes have taken part in training sessions on the topic of dementia to learn how they can better support the residents in our homes to live in comfort.

Earlier this year, Springkell House Care Home welcomed the friends and families of their residents for an education session focused on the topic of dementia, supported by Two Line Training. The goal of this session was to provide a better understanding of dementia and how to support those with dementia, in a friendly environment where everyone could feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their feelings. The feedback from everyone in attendance was very positive, and they left with a better understanding of how they can help their loved ones.

Within our homes, we take steps to make sure everything about a resident’s day-to-day routine is as easy as possible, from adapting our communication methods to thinking about how meals are served to them. It’s these small changes our staff can make that will hopefully make a big difference to our residents.

Our new building being constructed at Robertson Nursing Home has been designed with our residents’ needs in mind. This includes quiet lounges where they can relax, dedicated activities spaces, and adapted living and dining facilities that will help to make everyday tasks more manageable for residents with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Our programme of activities and events is developed to be inclusive and accommodating to residents impacted by Alzheimer’s. Activities like pet therapy and music therapy are designed to be relaxing and calming for residents, while evoking positive memories and associations from times in their lives. Armchair exercises help residents stay active with simple exercises to build strength and mobility, while our various outdoor activities, like gardening, help residents to enjoy movement while giving them a sense of purpose.

The staff within our homes are also passionate about doing their part in the fight against dementia, and have volunteered their time to take on various fundraising challenges to support those organisations providing research and assistance into Alzheimer’s and dementia. This year alone, team members from Ashton Manor Nursing Home have completed a 13-mile trek around London in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society, and the North Downs 25km challenge in support of Dementia UK. Thanks to the support of our community and the tireless efforts of the team in fundraising, they were able to smash their target and raise over £2,600 for these worthy causes.

Please take some time during World Alzheimer’s Month to learn about the impact Alzheimer’s and dementia have on people in the UK and throughout the world. The Alzheimer’s Society are campaigning for faster diagnosis and better support for those with dementia. They have some fantastic educational resources on their website, as well as ideas on how you can get involved:  https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/
