Why good sleep matters: Supporting sleep health

Published on 13th March 2026

We all feel so much better after a good night’s sleep, and sleep plays such an important part in health and wellbeing, especially for the residents in our homes. Research has shown that sleep can be just as important as nutrition and exercise, and poor sleep can negatively impact both the body and mind.

Sleep health is a key factor in the holistic approach to care we take within our homes.

Residents’ sleep quality, preferences, and any negative sleep factors are all included in the personalised care plans developed for each individual, so our team can be aware of residents’ specific needs and take steps to support them.

A big factor in sleep health is routine; we support our residents to develop a good sleep routine that works for them. Following the same schedule every night, with a routine they are familiar and comfortable with, helps our residents to relax and feel at ease in preparation for a good night’s sleep. Some of our residents are night owls while others are early risers, and they all have different pre-sleep rituals they like to follow. We help residents to find a routine that takes into account their preferences and sets them up for a peaceful sleep.

The right environment is also key to promoting good sleep. Every resident of a Beritaz Care home has their own private, comfortable room, filled with personal items that make them feel at home. We encourage our residents to make their space feel personal to them, with photos, pictures, décor and other items that make them feel comfortable and at ease. The rooms are equipped with specialist equipment to support our residents to live comfortably, including profiling beds to ensure comfort, support and pressure relief. We also monitor environmental factors that may impact resident sleep, such as temperature and noise, to help ensure the best possible sleep space.

Good sleep supports memory, learning and brain health, as well as impacting physical energy levels and supporting the immune system.

Sleep is an essential factor in maintaining our residents’ health. Good sleep supports memory, learning and brain health, as well as impacting physical energy levels and supporting the immune system. Some of our homes have been testing AI tools that help with sleep monitoring, to help our care staff identify anything that may be impacting our residents’ sleep, so we can help to resolve it. This can also help to identify sleep disorders that may indicate other health issues, which can then be quickly diagnosed. We have dedicated night care teams at all of our homes, so there is someone available at any hour of the night should our residents need anything, or to respond to any health concerns that may arise during the night.

There are many factors that impact health and wellbeing within a care setting, and sleep is one of those elements that may not immediately come to mind. But at Beritaz Care, we know a good night’s sleep is an important building block in supporting our residents to live their best, feel good, and maintain the health of their minds and bodies.

Today is World Sleep Day, an event aimed at raising sleep health awareness among researchers, healthcare workers and the public. The theme of World Sleep Day 2026 is ‘Sleep well, live better’, encouraging everyone to take steps to prioritise their sleep routine to benefit their overall health. Join us in learning about the importance of sleep to health and wellbeing, and make sure you are getting a good night’s sleep.
