Alan's story...
Alan has been a resident at Robertson Nursing Home since 2022 and has come a long way since joining the home.
Alan came to us for support with rehabilitation to improve his mobility after an operation, having arrived at the home unable to walk by himself. Working closely with his medical providers and following their recommendations, our nursing and care teams created a personalised care plan to support Alan in regaining his strength and mobility, as well as building his confidence and sense of independence.
Within the home, Alan has the support of our care staff and local medical providers to support both his mobility and other health needs.
“I can walk without using a walking stick, I don’t outside, but inside I do. We get regular visits from the doctor once or twice a week, she gives up her morning to be here, so we know we always have a doctor who will come when called.”
In 2025, after working closely with our physiotherapist and care staff, Alan was able to achieve his goal of walking his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day. With the support of our staff and his own incredible perseverance, Alan was able to greatly improve his mobility in his time at the home and was able to spend this very special day with his family, watching his daughter get married.
Alan represents his fellow residents as a member of our resident council. The council members meet each month to discuss their ideas for everything from minibus trip destinations to menus for mealtimes, and everything else happening in the home. They also bring forward ideas from their fellow residents, ensuring everyone has a voice.
“I am half of the resident council, there used to be three of us, now there are two. Mostly we talk about what’s happened and what’s going to happen.”
At Robertson Nursing Home, Alan has the freedom and support to live how he chooses, within the safety and comfort of the home, while maintaining his independence with his day-to-day routine.
“I spend a lot of time in my room with a book, reading is my main hobby. I enjoy reading thrillers, books about crime and mysteries mostly. I’m not very sociable, I keep myself to myself. I have a large tablet which I spend a lot of time on. While others watch TV, I prefer to browse my tablet, watching shows, movies, videos, and news items. Just like my books, I enjoy thrillers and detective TV shows."
With Alan preferring to spend a lot of his free time in his room, it is important that he has a space that feels homely and comfortable.
“Having my own room and my own space helped me settle in. I’ve been in my room for four years, it has my pictures and my notice board up and all my things decorating it. It has felt like home from early on.”
“My room has a bed, armchair, dressing table, and wardrobe. There is a bathroom with a colourful curtain separating it, which my daughter-in-law set up for me. Communal living is quite good, it’s not communal in the sense of living in a dormitory, it’s more like living in a hotel.”
He is also a fan of the meals provided at Robertson, all cooked by our skilled kitchen team, following seasonal menus designed to offer a variety of choice.
“The food is lovely. I enjoy my food in general, and there is enough choice to avoid the few things I don’t want to eat. All the people here are 80 plus, so brought up on the food of the 50s, 60s, 70s. The food is well cooked and well served, it is predictable when meals are going to appear. Can’t go wrong!”
Alan regularly meets with the local priest and takes part in Holy Communion which he enjoys having the opportunity to do. This is something which we aim to make available for any resident who wishes to take part.
“There was a ‘lay pastoral assistant’, that’s what he called himself, and he used to bring me communion. We now have monthly communion at the home with the priest from the local church in Compton. It’s good that we can do that.”
Alan has also joined in with the minibus trips to explore various locations in the local area.
“When it’s somewhere I want to go, I will join for minibus outings. I enjoy the trip and looking at everything out of the window as we travel. I like to sit behind the driver, so I feel a bit like I’m in control, except I’m NOT a backseat driver and don’t tell him that he’s doing anything wrong.”
Along with many of the current residents of Robertson, Alan has watched the construction of the new building with keen interest.
“We overlooked the building site, so until the top floor went on, we could see it all go up and how all the floors were laid out. Now the fascia is completed, we can’t see as much, so I don’t know what’s going on inside. It has been interesting to look out and see what’s going on and watch it be built from the ground up. It went from a lawn to a big hole and then a building.”
“I’ll wait and see what it looks like. I’ don’t know what to expect on the inside. We do have an architect’s drawing on the wall in the home, so you get a pretty good idea of what it’s going to be like. The rooms I think will be much more five-star hotel standard and have a proper en-suite bathroom.”
Alan is happy and comfortable at Robertson Nursing Home. He is able to spend his days how he wishes, with the peace of mind that our team are there should he need anything at all.
“The staff are all excellent. You need to ask very few questions about staff, living conditions or food, because they are all excellent. I have my room with my decorations, and I have lots of visual entertainment. I have everything I ask for. I don’t have any worries at all.”
