Josephine's story...
Josephine has been a resident at Springkell House Care Home since December 2024. After a lengthy stay in hospital, Josephine needed somewhere she would be safe and well supported, as well as somewhere she could feel at home. As Josephine’s daughter, Sarah, lives close to the home, she has also been a regular visitor. It has been wonderful to welcome them both into the Springkell House community.
Sarah explains what she was looking for in the right care home for her mum, and why coming to Springkell House has been such a positive move for the family.
“Mum had been in the hospital for three months and couldn’t safely live on her own anymore, so it was really important to find a care home she could move into that would meet her needs. I started knocking on doors in the local area, asking to have a look around but was met with mixed reactions.”
“Some of the homes were a bit shifty and wanted me to book in advance before I could take a tour, which always made it seem a bit like they had something to hide. I much preferred to just go and take a look straight away, rather than wait for them to book me in, as it gave me a better perspective of the home.”
“When I came to Springkell House, the Home Manager was very nice and more than happy to show me around right then and there. All the staff at the home seemed very nice as I was looking around, I immediately felt that they were people I could trust to look after my mum well. I feel that the staff really make the place.”
“When Mum first moved into the home she wasn’t very mobile after being in the hospital for so long, but the staff at Springkell House helped her get back on her feet. They were very encouraging and supported Mum to improve her mobility. Thanks to their help, Mum can now make it to the toilet and back on her own, which is a big thing for her, and they help her with tasks she finds trickier, like showering.”
“The staff are very kind and accommodating. Mum is quite specific about her routine and what she wants to do, but the staff always do everything they can to make her feel comfortable and accommodate her needs. She prefers to eat in her room and they have enabled her to do this, she has even put on weight in the time she has been at the home, which is good to see.”
“Mum isn’t very outgoing and struggles with her hearing, so she isn’t keen on taking part in the activities with the other residents. But the staff members keep a close eye on her to make sure she is comfortable and has everything she needs. She can get confused easily and doesn’t always recognise who I am, but the staff have been very kind and supported her to settle in well. If there is ever anything I need to discuss or if I have any concerns, they are always happy to talk to me.”
“Springkell House was the perfect choice for both Mum and myself. I bought a property next door to the home about 15 years ago, so it felt like it was meant to be. I had been living in Qatar but have now moved back to that property, so I get to live next door to Mum. Being so close means I get to visit with her most days, while having the peace of mind that she is safe and well cared for.”
