I have worked at Robertson Nursing Home since 2019. I had a year away between 2023/24 but have now been back part-time for almost a year. I previously ran my own business specialising in commercial art projects in interiors, theatre, and film from the early 1980s to 2014. 

I had to reduce my involvement in this due to illness, and then became a full-time carer for three years for my mother-in-law, who was suffering from dementia. She became a resident at another local care home to which I was a frequent visitor.

My own mother spent her last few months at Robertson Nursing Home, having been diagnosed with a brain tumour. The wonderful care she received from the staff here inspired me to take on a role at the home, and I now enjoy their camaraderie and friendship as part of the Robertson team.

I like to think I help them through their difficult circumstances through the laughter that we share together. 

As Activities Coordinator, I am responsible for keeping the residents actively engaged in activities which are meaningful and stimulating. I also create the monthly activities calendar, which is delivered by my team of Care Companions.

My favourite part of the job is being able to make a difference to our residents’ days by giving them encouragement. I like to think I help them through their difficult circumstances through the laughter that we share together.

I have received comprehensive training from Beritaz in all areas of care and dementia care, which has reinforced the knowledge I have gained through my experience over the last ten years.

My favourite memories from my time at the home are derived from Catch 22—a musical trio I created with a resident and his friend, both lifelong musicians. We were able to perform once a month, and this, plus our weekly rehearsals, always gave him a boost! In his memory, David and I continue to perform as Catch 22-1.
